Can you tell me what is better than watching world class tennis players play tennis with each other and with celebrities to raise money for a good cause? Nothing! Ok, well they are some things but this is pretty high up there. Now I normally spend most days at the BNP Paribas Open but was able to sneak away to watch the K-Swiss Desert Smash held at the stunning La Quinta Resort (a short distance from the tournament) which raises money for the charity, Variety.
The day started out with a pro am tournament in the morning which then led to the exhibition matches featuring pros like Jack Sock, Sam Querrey, Fernando Verdasco, Bryan Brothers, Mardy Fish and Novak Djokovic. The event was packed with people sitting around the stadium court watching some fun filled tennis.
My favorite match of the day was the celebrity doubles match featuring the pairings of Fish and LMFAO singer Redfoo versus Djokovic and Entourage star, Jeremy Piven. All the players were mic’d up so we could hear their comments (or trash talking). The highlights of this 4 game match included Jeremy hitting Novak in the back with a serve, Redfoo attempting a tweener and making it, Mardy bombing a huge serve to Jeremy which caused him to scream like a girl, and Novak flirting with the referee to get a line call to go his way. Oh and in case you are wondering, Redfoo was using the Wilson Juice 100, the racquet of choice for WTA star Victoria Azarenka. And Jeremy Piven was rocking some K-Swiss Bigshot IIs out on the court.
During each break between matches, there were auctions being held for prizes such as Elton John tickets, BNP Paribas Open tickets, tennis balls, Prince EXO3 Rebel 95 racquets, and apparel signed by the pros, one of a kind paintings by Brendan Murphy (creator of the Solfire apparel), and even a kiss from Verdasco! We also got to meet some of the adorable children that benefit from this charity.
If that wasn’t enough for one day, we headed to the restaurant Figue Mediterranean where we got to mingle with tennis professionals and celebrities alike and snack on food prepared by Top Chef contestant CJ Jacobson. Celebrity sightings included Daniela Hantuchova, Jack Sock, Emmanuelle Chrique, Lance Bass, and Boris Kodjoe to name a few. To top off the evening the LMFAO crew with Redfoo provided entertainment and this girl happened to be front row and even got to sing along with Redfoo. I have to say it was one of the most amazing nights of my life.
Next year will be the tenth year of the event and I am sure it is going to be one to remember.
That is all for this blogger today. However, throughout the tournament, I will be posting fun events to attend outside of the BNP Paribas Open so make sure to check back on our blog (and Twitter and Facebook) for all of the latest updates from the BNP Paribas Open.
