2013 US Open gear check: Serena Williams

Whenever Serena Williams steps onto the court, she’s a force to be reckoned with. It’s no wonder that she’s the No. 1 seed in the 2013 US Open. Let’s take a quick look at the gear she’s been using to dispatch her opponents.

Her apparel: Nike reserves special looks for its top athletes, and there’s no doubt Serena is one of those. She is the only Nike athlete to don the Heathered V-Neck Dress on court. She has it in two colors: Dark Armory Blue for night and Fusion Red for day. This dress reminds me a bit of a ballet look with its tighter top and looser skirt, which this time is done in a lightweight woven fabric that’s perfect for the hot, humid weather in New York. Underneath she wears the Slam Short. She uses a Nike bandana in a special color to keep her back, while matching wristbands keep the sweat at bay. For her shoes, she chooses to wear the Nike Mirabella 3, a now discontinued model that’s not available for purchase. Hey, being No. 1 in the world has its perks!

Her gear: Not that Serena needs help in the power department, but her Wilson Blade 104 helps deliver extra punch with its extended length, large sweetspot and Power Hole grommets. On the handle, she, like so many others, opts for Wilson Pro Overgrip in white. For string, she goes for a hybrid of Luxilon 4G 16L and Wilson Natural Gut. That setup is going to offer a mix of spin and control, plus added comfort from the gut.

Happy US Open Watching!
