US Open 2013 Gear Check: Andy Murray

Posted on September 3, 2013 in Miscellaneous Pro Tennis Talk Shoes and Apparel

After winning Wimbledon for the first time this year, Andy Murray enters the US Open as the defending champion and is looking to get another Grand Slam title under his belt in 2013. Already into the round of 16, let’s see what gear he is using  that has got him this far into the tournament.

His apparel: Andy is keeping his look sharp and simple on the court during the Open by wearing the adidas Barricade line. The Adipower Barricade Crew has a two-piece crew neck with contrast inserts, mesh along the upper back for increased ventilation and colorblocking with the Band of Power across the chest. This crew does a great job of keeping Murray cool despite the NYC summer sun and humidity. The Fall Barricade Woven Short in the 9.5″ length keeps this look simple and focuses on ventilation with the added mesh panels. To keep the sweat off his face and away from his grip, Andy uses adidas Large Wristbands. As far as shoes go, Andy is in the Barricade 7.0 to ensure stability, traction and support for all of his quick on-court movement.

His gear: Andy finds the perfect blend of feel and stability with his Head Youtek IG Radical Pro. This racquet gives him a lively, spin-friendly response from the baseline with a crisp controlled feel at the net. He has it strung up with the very popular ATP tour string, Luxilon ALU Power 16L, which gives him added controlled power and is a durable option. He uses Tourna Grip XL as his overgrip of choice to make sure he has a soft, yet absorbing grip throughout his matches. To carry all of his gear to the court, Andy uses his very own Head Murray MonsterCombi bag which is big enough to carry all of his racquets, apparel, and more.

Play with heart,

Get Murray’s style at the US Open

Andy Murray’s gold medal win catapulted him into the spotlight. Now he’s stepping up in the 2012 US Open, trying to prove to the tennis world that he is not just a one trick pony. In the first round he cleaned up Alex Bogomolov Jr. in three sets and tonight he’s scheduled as second match on after 7pm to play Ivan Dodig. What gear is he rocking this US Open? Why, funny you asked, I was just about to tell you.

Murray will be ripping some big forehands with his weapon of choice: the Head YOUTEK IG Radical Pro. Noted by our playtesters as a serious player’s racquet, it offers a ton of power, spin potential and plow through. A lot of plow through. Did I say a lot? It has ample maneuverability as well as high levels of comfort, so offers a lot for the all-court player who wants to really get some heavy pace behind the ball.

As Mark Twain once said, “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” Well, thank you, Mark! Wise words indeed. The clothes making Murray at this tournament are, obviously, adidas. On top he has the adidas Men’s Autumn adipower Barricade Crew, which features really cool tonal camo mesh insets on the back.  This crew actually comes in two colors (the other is called Urban Sky with Bright Gold, otherwise known as a grey-looking shade with gold features). Love it.

On the bottom half he’s rocking the adidas Men’s Autumn adipower Barricade Bermuda. They also have the tonal camo print down the sides as well as contrast trim on the pockets. I really like the camo design on these: subtle yet trendy. Andy wears them in the Urban Sky with Bright Gold colorway, but also come in a white for a fresh approach.

Andy is always one to rock the extras, and at this tournament he has done nothing less. On his feet he’s rocking the adidas barricade 7.0 Urban Sky/Gold Men’s Shoes that offer the traditional quality, support, stability and durability that we have come to expect from this brand. He also has on his adidas wristbands to wipe away the sweat (check out our collection here) and a hat from the adidas collection (see what adidas hats we have to offer here) to keep the sun out of his eyes and his shot precision extra sharp.

Stay tuned tonight for his match to see if he advances to the third round and to see what he wears for his night matches!
