In an unlikely turn of events at the US Open, two players who had never made it to a Grand Slam final found themselves taking the stage to battle on Monday.
Croatian sensation and Head player, Marin Cilic closed out an amazing two week run by defeating Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in a routine win. With 17 aces and 35 winners, Cilic saved 8 of the 9 break points he faced and played like he belonged at the top. The 25 year old credited his win to all of his hard work and his team, including former Wimbledon Champion, Goran Ivanisevic. Nishikori also had a tournament to be proud of, left his heart on the court but just didn’t have enough to put away the big hitting Cilic on Monday.
On the women’s side of things, off court besties, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki faced each other in the finals. Serena proved to be too strong again and was running Wozniacki all over the court — even her marathon training wasn’t enough to upset the number one seed. Serena captured her 6th US Open title and 18th Grand Slam title to add to her impressive resume.
The Bryan Brothers hit 100 titles last weekend at the Open taking the men’s doubles, while the Russian team of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, long time Fed Cup partners, captured the Women’s doubles title.
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m already missing the tennis…good thing we have some Davis Cup action to look forward to this weekend!
Play with heart,
Truth be told, I have never been a big fan of Caroline Wozniacki. Mostly because I found her style of play to be boring and I couldn’t relate to her passive tennis. I always found myself critiquing the fact that she didn’t seem to have a weapon besides her consistency. Until recently.
Maybe it was the break up with Rory or the fact that she is training for the NYC marathon. Or maybe she is just maturing into her game and building a more offensive style. Whatever it is, I am loving this new Wozniacki and here’s why:
