Nike’s 2014 summer tennis collection plays with print, color

Unless you’re a Nike faithful, you might not know that Nike launches new apparel collections at the start of each quarter. Today the summer 2014 collections roll out, and on May 1, we’ll get a few more pieces when we’ll see what Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, and the rest of the Nike athlete crew will wear for this year’s French Open.

Quick review: Nike Women’s Lunar Ballistec tennis shoes

NWLBPK-1The much anticipated launch of the Nike Lunar Ballistec is here!  As a brand new shoe offering from Nike, this shoe combines the durability and support of a Nike Air Max Courtballistec (available for men) with the comfort and light weight of the  Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour.  The shoe will have some professional backing and will be worn on court by Victoria Azarenka.

Michelle and Brittany were lucky enough to get to playtest this shoe for a couple weeks, and they both unanimously agreed this is one of their favorite shoes to play in.  Some of the standout features included comfort, durability (and a six-month guarantee!), weight and cosmetics.  Here is some of their feedback:

Brittany on Comfort: “This shoe has some of the best comfort I have ever experienced. The cushioning was perfect throughout the shoe. It was very plush feeling especially under the heel.”

Michelle on Durability: “The typical balding under my big toe isn’t happening yet; yes, the sole has smoothed, but nothing that looks like the sole will become too slippery to move confidently in. These are holding up really well, which is great since I’m loving these shoes!”

Brittany on Weight: “It is one of the lightest shoes I have ever playtested (even lighter than the Vapor 9 Tour). While it feels light and quick on the court, it definitely does not feel flimsy. Nike did a great job of combining light weight, support and durability. ”

Michelle on Cosmetics: “Honestly, the fact that I was able to playtest the flouro pink colorway adds to my love of this shoe. So I love the color – every time I wore these I got comments about how bright and fun they look!”

The two playtesters agreed that there was one small negative, the shoe wasn’t as ventilated as they would have liked.  Although, neither found that to be an issue as they continue to wear the shoes both on and off court.

Best new gear at the 2013 Australian Open

As the first week of the 2013 Australian Open comes to a close, I want to spotlight some of the great new gear we have seen introduced at the tournament. There’s tons of new racquets, shoes and apparel being released at the beginning of the year, so I want to dish out some awards to the best introductions of new swag at the first Grand Slam of 2013…

Best men’s outfit (shirt/shorts only, no shoes):  Lotto

I’m going with a surprise in this category, but I think the new Lotto outfit is awesome. The bright yellow design is super eye-catching on TV, and they have quite a few guys still going in the draw, like Kevin Anderson, Nicolas Almagro, and David Ferrer. They are wearing the Lotto Men’s Spring Graphic LED Crew and the Spring LED Short (and Bermuda Short).  Look for this gear to become available from TW next month.

Color Your Feet

When it comes to women and tennis shoes, there is sometimes a lack of color and style in the tennis industry. The excitement we have in, let’s say, high heels doesn’t transfer over to the design of tennis shoes. There’s so much more hype on next season’s men’s shoes than women’s. It’s been known that men have more passion when it comes to sneakers, but women have an overall shoe addiction. So why has the excitement stopped when it comes to women’s tennis shoes?

With the launch of new women’s shoes, white and grey shoes sell the best. In theory, it’s a style that will match any tennis outfit. Personally, I wish my feet could step into something colorful! For those who want a stylish and exciting look, the following shoes will not only bring pizazz to your tennis wardrobe, but also offer comfort and stability for the high performance wear!

With spring here and summer along the way, Nike adds violet to its Zoom Breathe 2K10 line. With the colorful the cage, you get the support needed in aggressive movement as well as a style that Nike executed beautifully.

Another Nike shoe that I loved to play in was the Air Max Mirabella III. The green apple and vibrant blue version is from last season so it’s now on sale. This is for the player with a medium width foot looking for a full package of comfort, support, and of course a joyful pop of color! (Click here for TW’s review.)

adidas joins the season’s trend of pastels with its Fresh Pink Barricade adilibria. The tonal design gives it an added texture. If the pink seems too feminine, players can find a bolder look with the purple metallic version or tone it down to a white with intense green stripes. Barricades have a reputation for being one of the best high performance shoes out there, and they live up to it! (Click here for TW’s review.)

Asics designed a shoe with a Flexion Fit upper in a cage-like design. The bold black with hot pink underlay makes the Gel Resolution 3 a shoe for the aggressive player who wants to match her game with her look. Our site says we currently do no have them in stock, but we’ll be getting another shipment in two months. This shoe is too good not to mention its stability and comfort.
