You may know him as Baby Fed, or Hollywood, or maybe by which WTA Diva he is currently dating, but yesterday, Grigor Dimitrov made sure people should know him strictly for his tennis, heart, and fight on the court.
Just 21 years old, the young Bulgarian defeated Novak Djokovic in the second round of Madrid in a battle 7-6 (6), 6-7 (8), 6-3. Nothing short of being a dramatic match, Dimitrov came out victorious, covered in red clay and bloody knees after he waded out the storm. The match was complete with Djokovic twisting an ankle, proceeded by taking a long injury time out, Dimitrov fought through body cramps, and the fans got behind the underdog and chanted his name until the end. After shaking hands, the Bulgarian was clearly proud, fought back tears and signed the camera by writing “I love you Dad.”
The players have been coming out early in the morning this week down here in Miami to escape the heat. And more importantly, so they can secure their own court to practice on and have the luxury of using a full court instead of splitting one with any of their tour rivals. On Tuesday, I had a quality practice with Caroline Wozniacki on Centre Court but today even
Both Caroline and Serena will be opening up play tomorrow in Miami. Serena will play Flavia Pennetta second on the Main Stadium, while Caroline’s first match is against qualifier Karolina Pliskova and will be third on over on the Grandstand.
Kevin Anderson is continuing to grind and work hard here in Miami. He was already hitting them big when I arrived to the site this morning at 8:15, he must have started around 7am. It looks like he won’t officially take to the courts until Friday, which gives him enough time to adjust to the Miami heat and humidity.
Great effort by all of them.
Enjoy the Tennis!
As the first week of the 2013 Australian Open comes to a close, I want to spotlight some of the great new gear we have seen introduced at the tournament. There’s tons of new racquets, shoes and apparel being released at the beginning of the year, so I want to dish out some awards to the best introductions of new swag at the first Grand Slam of 2013…
Best men’s outfit (shirt/shorts only, no shoes): Lotto
I’m going with a surprise in this category, but I think the new Lotto outfit is awesome. The bright yellow design is super eye-catching on TV, and they have quite a few guys still going in the draw, like Kevin Anderson, Nicolas Almagro, and David Ferrer. They are wearing the Lotto Men’s Spring Graphic LED Crew and the Spring LED Short (and Bermuda Short). Look for this gear to become available from TW next month.
