TW Playtester Andy’s Pick of the Week – Yonex EZONE Ai 98

YAI98-2A recent surprise for me, and one of my favorite playtests of the past year, has been the Yonex EZONE Ai 98. The update to the popular Xi 98 and Ana Ivanovic‘s new racquet of choice for 2014 features a re-designed Isometric head shape to help increase swing speed, as well as a new dampening system that helps make the racquet feel plush and comfortable.

This racquet offers an outstanding blend of every attribute you’d look for in a racquet. It has a crisp, lively feel that allows for easy access to power and spin, while still providing the precision needed to give you the confidence to go for your shots and aim them close to the lines. It’s fast through the air and easy to swing, but it’s also solid and stable. Most importantly (to me at least), the feel is crisp yet RESPONSIVE, and I felt completely connected to each shot. I felt like I could hit any shot in my repertoire and know exactly where it was going to go each and every time.

US Open 2013 Gear Check: Ana Ivanovic

Ana Ivanovic is wearing one of my favorite looks this week at the US Open in her adidas Adizero line of clothes — I’m loving the bright color combos in this collection! She takes the court in the next round against American, Christina McHale (who also is wearing pieces from the adizero Fall collection). So, let’s take a quick look at what Ana is styling on the courts of Flushing Meadows.

Her apparel: The colors in this collection absolutely pop out there on the court and I love the reddish-orange combo with the dark blue. Ana is wearing the Fall Adizero Dress in the Hi-Res Red (orange) with Hero Ink color. This bold, lightweight adidas dress features a scoop neck, racerback straps, mesh inserts at the chest and upper back for increased ventilation. Also, this dress comes with a matching sports bra and compression short so you don’t have to worry about finding coordinating pieces! On her feet, she is wearing the adizero CC Tempaia IIs in a colorway that matches her dress perfectly. These lightweight, fast shoes offer extreme breathability and have been designed with maximum ventilation, which for sure help keep Ana’s feet cool on the hot NYC days. She shields the sun from her face, with her matching adizero II visor.

Her gear: Ana’s racquet of choice is the Yonex E-Zone Xi 98 which provides a stable, yet flexible, soft feel offering excellent power and a flexible, forgiving feel. From the baseline, this racquet feels very maneuverable allowing easy access to fast swings for power and spin generation. Shy hybrids her string with Solinco Tour Bite 16 with Wilson Natural Gut 16. She carries her gear on court with her Yonex Pro Bag.

Play with heart,

Michelle

adidas Roland Garros Collections

The count down to the French Open is on and we are ready to outfit you in everything you could possibly need to be Roland Garros ready!

Ana Ivanovic will be sporting the adidas Roland Garros collection this year in Paris. The collection is complete with two color ways available in two tops (one tank, one cap sleeve), a skirt, a dress, and wristbands to complete the look. This years collection features some fun colors that pop and are perfect for the clay court season. These pieces have the signature adidas ClimaCool technology, contrast piped colors, lacey/frilled layered designs and the Roland Garros logo. The whole collection is full of really fun colors that will look great on and off the court. And I must say, I am loving the wristbands that match perfectly!

On the men’s side, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be taking to the courts in the adidas Roland Garros gear. The men’s collection also has two color options to chose from in each piece and features a lightweight polo, a Bermuda shorthats, and matching wristbands. Featuring bright yellow and vivid blue, these outfits will add personality to your wardrobe on or off the court. The items come with the adidas signature 3 stripe logo, mesh panelling details to ensure a cool fit and the Roland Garros logo.

Main draw gets underway at BNP Paribas Open

Andy Murray signs autographs for the fans.

Andy Murray signs autographs for the fans.

Yesterday, it actually turned out to be a sunny day at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. But from 3:30 p.m. on the temperature dropped, and a warm jacket was a good item to have in the bag.

Andy Murray, pictured above, practiced and signed some autographs afterward.

The top 32 seeded players have a later start here because they have a bye here. This means they can practice and prepare a bit longer than the non-seeds. Usually after match day you have a day off. It is a bit like at the Grand Slams.

The main stadium at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

What a stadium!

All players love to be here and love to play in the main stadium in front of a special crowd here at Indian Wells.

It was another early day that began with Sorana Cirstea. My colleague Sven Groeneveld and I were on court with her together with her full-time coach Victor Ionita.

Best new gear at the 2013 Australian Open

As the first week of the 2013 Australian Open comes to a close, I want to spotlight some of the great new gear we have seen introduced at the tournament. There’s tons of new racquets, shoes and apparel being released at the beginning of the year, so I want to dish out some awards to the best introductions of new swag at the first Grand Slam of 2013…

Best men’s outfit (shirt/shorts only, no shoes):  Lotto

I’m going with a surprise in this category, but I think the new Lotto outfit is awesome. The bright yellow design is super eye-catching on TV, and they have quite a few guys still going in the draw, like Kevin Anderson, Nicolas Almagro, and David Ferrer. They are wearing the Lotto Men’s Spring Graphic LED Crew and the Spring LED Short (and Bermuda Short).  Look for this gear to become available from TW next month.

Ivanovic shines at the US Open

Ana Ivanovic in action at the US Open. Photo by Cynthia Lum.

Ana Ivanovic’s third round match is set, and she’s set to play the rising American teen, Sloane Stephens. They’ve played only once before, and it’s an eerily familiar situation. Last year, Ana and Sloane met in the same round with Ivanovic winning 6-3, 6-4. It’s a new year and a Open, we’ll see how this one plays out. The crowd is sure to be backing the young American, though it’s hard to cheer for a smiling Ana Ivanovic, too.

When Ana steps onto the court, one thing is for sure: She’s sure to look stylish. Here’s a quick look at how you can get her look.

It’s been all about the bright neons this summer, and her adidas adizero dress is ready for the electrifying energy of the US Open. It’s a bright Lab Lime. A unique feature to this dress is that it’s actually a three-piece set that includes the dress, coordinating sports bra and shortie.

On her feet, Ana is wearing the adizero Tempaia II in White/Pink. This is a lightweight shoe that’s built for speed. At Tennis Warehouse, we just started our review process for this shoe. So far the feedback is that the fit and comfort is improved over the previous version. Ana keeps those sock tan lines at bay by choosing some adidas no-show socks. Get a similar look with either the ClimaLite II 2-Pack or the Sport No-Show 2-Pack.

For accessories, Ana goes for cute and functional. To keep the sun off her face, she wears an adidas visor. We have several to choose from, but the adidas Match Visor is easy to mix and match with any outfit or go for an all pink ClimaLite Visor.

Her racquet of choice is the Yonex EZONE Xi 98. This midplus racquet packs a big punch off the ground, making it a great choice for baseliners like Ana.

Sloane will step onto court in her Under Armour gear with Head Prestige racquet, ready to take out another seed. She beat took out 22nd seed Francesca Schiavone in the first round in straight sets. We’ll see if history will repeat itself this year or if Sloane will advance to the fourth round, which would make it her best US Open to date.

Happy US Open Watching!

The Best Seats in the House at the BNP Paribas Open

The BNP Paribas Open offers some of the best seats in all of tennis and they’re probably not what and where you’re thinking. Sure, the luxury suites inside the main stadium are amazing; they have a perfect view of the court and offer such amenities like catered food/drink and even indoor/outdoor viewing options. They’re pretty awesome but they’re not what I’m talking about. You’re thinking that I then, must be referring to the box seats at the grand stand where you’re sitting within 50 feet of the pros. Can’t get any better right? Nope, not that either.

So what am I talking about? I’m talkin’ ‘bout practice. Practice?! The practice courts that is. In my opinion, the best seats in the house. For tennis geeks like myself, it really doesn’t get much better than that. It’s at those practice courts where you can sit literally, a couple feet (not 50) from your favorite player. It’s at those practice courts where you can see what the pros are working on for their upcoming match. Who doesn’t love behind-the-scenes type stuff? I watched Ana Ivanovic practice her serve as she tried to hit colored cones in the service box. And conversely, a few courts away, Victoria Azarenka was working on her return while her coach served at her from the service line. It’s at the practice courts where you can witness some of the best match ups not in the main draw. This year I saw some ridiculous points between Kei Nishikori and Andy Murray from 10 feet away, watched Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco flatten the ball in some thunderous rallies, and Philipp Kohlschreiber rally back and forth with Gael Monfils, just to name a few.

Don’t believe me? Then I’ll let these pictures do the convincing (click to enlarge).

Yea, I’m talkin’ about practice.

Get the Look of the Pros’ Practice Gear Part 2

I am back in action today in beautiful Indian Wells, California, perusing the practice courts looking at more women’s fashion. I was able to catch Victoria Azarenka, Dominika Cibulkova and Ana Ivanovic showing off their tennis ability and fashion sense.

Victoria Azarenka

First up, Victoria Azarenka was warming up on one of the top two practice courts in front of a large crowd. Her practical yet fasionable outfit stood out under the sun. You can replicate her outfit by wearing the Nike Crush Tennis Blockbuster Tee in Tide Pool Blue on top and the Nike Basic Pro Capri II in black. In addition, you can sport Nike Lunar Speed 3 shoes and a Nike Crush Feather Light Visor in Tide Pool Blue to complete the look.

Dominika Cibulkova

I spotted Dominika Cibulkova playing farther down on the practice courts. While she may be on the smaller side, I can definitely tell you she hits the crap out of the ball and looks good doing it. You too can wear a similar style in the Lacoste Spring Graphic Tee in grey, Lacoste Spring Tennis Shortie in navy and the Nike Zoom Breathe 2K11 shoes.

Ana Ivanovic

Lastly as I was making my way back around the practice courts, I ran into Ana Ivanovic practing. Look like Ana by wearing a comparable tank and shorts such as the adidas Fall Response Bar Tank in White/Intense Pink and adidas Spring Sequential Short in Black. Cap off the look with the adidas Barricade 6 London and the adidas Grandslam II Visor in White/Pink.

What do you wear to practice?
