Rack-et-ing the brain

I’ve hit a road block on this tennis journey of mine. (If you missed the first leg of my “journey,” check it out here.) I am being Ms. Indecisive. I’ve rekindled my fling with the Dunlop Aerogel 4D 300 Tour, and I’m still flirting with the ProKennex Black Ace 98. Every time the playtesters head out for the courts I look for these two racquets. Because we’re currently testing the Black Ace, I don’t always get my hands on this one. I have been leaning toward the Dunlop this past week, but perhaps that’s because I’ve been too slow to get to the ProKennex first! I really would like to hit them side by side, though.

The Dunlop offers me great control, but I like the added power I think I’m getting from the Black Ace. My shots just have more weight to them. On the other hand, I’m getting better topspin with the Dunlop; I suspect it’s because I can swing it so much faster. Then again, man, I love to hit slice with the Black Ace. However, the Dunlop is also much easier for me to use on quick pickups on those really deep baseline shots. Ack! See what I mean, Ms. Indecisive.

I’m going to settle this soon. I have to or I just might drive myself nuts. If it’s just a flirtation with these racquets, the honeymoon phase has to be over soon. Right?

Until next time, Happy Hitting (with any racquet)!

  1. Tiffani, hope you can settle on your (temporary) holy grail soon. I am currently testing the 4D 300 Tour and the demo came with a soft multi in it (Dunlop Max Comfort). It feels great on touch shots an volleys, but a little too mushy when hitting from the baseline. What kind of strings have you tried in the racket and which do you prefer? Does a synthetic gut/poly provide a crisper feel from the baseline? Thanks.

  2. Hi Alex, I’ve tried just one multi at mid +2 in the 300 Tour. I can’t remember which multi was in there (it was months ago now), but I found that I like the spin production from poly better, and I did find a clean feel when strung with a poly. Right now, I’ve got it strung at mid with Topspin Concept Pure, which I think we’ll be bringing in. This offered a much firmer feel overall. It as a bit low powered and firm for me, so if I stuck with this string, I’d drop the tension. My favorite setup so far as been Luxilon M2 Pro at mid. This offered me some good spin and comfort.

  3. Cool. Thanks for the quick response. I definitely want to try it with a poly hybrid before I make a final decision on this racket, but I am seriously considering switching from my K Six One 95′s…want something a little lighter and more arm friendly, but still with the good control and feel of my current sticks. I loved the feel and control of this racket from the get go though…I’ve only even hit with it for a couple hours or so. Again, thanks for your input and happy hitting.

  4. Hey Tiffani,
Any idea on when the Black Ace review will hit the TW web site? Looking forward to reading it!

  5. Hi John, we should be wrapping it up soon. I’d say in the next few weeks the review should be ready. We’re currently wrapping up the Prince EXO3 Ignite review, and the Black Aces are to follow that one.

  6. Just thought I would let you know that I ended up switching to the 300 Tour. I’ve tried a few different strings so far and my favorite setup so far is Kirschbaum Pro Line II at 59 lbs. The PLII string feels great in these racquets and you should give it a try if you are still experimenting with the 300 Tour. It offers a little bit of everything…spin, control, comfort, feel, and a decent amount of pop for a poly. Happy hitting.
