Having lost in the singles I shifted my focus to the doubles tournament. In the round of 16 my partner and I faced two familiar faces. On the other side of the net were two players I played against last week, however they played with different partners. Damon Gooch and Sho Katayama paired up at the last minute with the hope of taking the doubles competition by storm. My partner, Keith and I, weren’t too keen on letting that happen.
We got off to a lethargic start and lost three straight deciding points to go down 3-0 in a flash. Thankfully we were able to settle down, and we came storming back to win the first set 6-3. I’d say our biggest advantage was knowing our opponents’ games and tendencies. Having played them both before I felt like I knew where they were going on the big points. I shared this information with my partner and we were able to turn things around in sensational fashion. We lost our focus again in the second set, and went down 4-1 before coming back again and sealing the deal 6-3 6-4.
All in all it wasn’t our most stellar performance, but it wasn’t too bad considering we haven’t teamed up since 2006. We have a lot of work to do and a long way to go, but we’re feeling confident about the rest of the tournament. We play our quarterfinal match later this afternoon.
