We are midway through the regular season in the TW Friday Doubles League after every team has now played each team in the league once. After three matches, Team Johnson and O’Leary stand atop the rankings with a perfect 3-0 record.
Week 3 started out with Team Blonde taking on Team Leftovers in a hotly contested match of contrasting styles. Michelle and Brittany began the match banging away from the baseline, with Troy and Mark using touch and feel shots around the net. The match was level at 2-2 when a number of consecutive deuce games all went the girls’ way. They jumped out in front and finished with an 8-3 victory.
Spencer returned from a trip to Roland Garros fired up and inspired to play good tennis, as Team Johnson and O’Leary took on Team Air Cooled. Granville and Chris came out on fire, making their first serves and taking over the net, jumping out to an early lead in the set. Andy and Spencer never let the match get too far out of reach and made a late run that propelled them to an 8-6 victory.

Since I didn’t want to ask myself questions, I had our resident string expert/comedian Jon come up with a few questions for Spennie and I…
Q: Spencer, how do you feel when Andy comes all the way over to your doubles alley to take one of your shots?
Spencer: Coach gave Andy the green light on everything so there isn’t really anything I can do. But don’t be surprised if Andy gets Jack Johnson’d one of these times he comes in my territory again.
Q: Andy, how do you feel your team name represents your team and style?
Andy: It represents our heart, fight and willingness to throw down anytime, anywhere. And we both also enjoy throwing unfinished burritos at people. Clearly, Spennie is the Jack Johnson of the team due to his Herculean strength.
Q: You guys both recently switched to Wilson racquets. Tell us your current favorite racquet set up and what you like about it?
Andy: I just switched to the Wilson Blade 98 18×20, and I like it strung up with Volkl Cyclone 17g at 56 pounds. The new racquet gives me a little more forgiveness and easy access to power and spin than my old Yonex RDiS 100 Mid, but still gives me plenty of touch, feel and control.
Spencer: My Steam 99 S strung up with Luxilon 4G 16g at 60 pounds. It gives me amazing spin, lots of control and plenty of feel.
Q: What’s your favorite pre and/or post match meal?
Spencer: Eggs, bacon, sausage, toast and coffee, followed by a couple of bagels .
Andy: I could eat Thai food for every meal every single day, but I think Jon wants me to mention how I ate a deep fried bacon cheeseburger with deep fried Oreos for lunch and then played amazing singles against Michelle afterwards. Make sure to order the TW Burger next time you see the Salt and Pepper food truck drive by!
That’s all for this week! Check back next week for more results and interviews!
