US Open – The Betting Line

The US Open is upon us (Starts Monday), and that means one thing and one thing only, it’s TW Office Pool time! OK, so it might mean more than one thing. Following the same format we used for the Wimbledon pool, each person takes a favorite and a dark horse. Winner will, of course get an adult beverage of their choice. Without further ado, here are the picks.

* Again, the odds are completely fictitious; don’t take this to the betting line in Vegas.

** If you do happen to win copious amounts of money betting with my odds, I want 5%. That’s standard.

*** These picks were taken without looking at the draw; so if our picks happen to knock each other out in the 2nd round, there’s no need for emails calling us names. But laugh all you want.

Fav: Juan Martin Del Potro. This tall drink of water has the weapons to win it all. He beat Nadal and Roddick at The Rogers Cup a few weeks ago. I question his stamina. Odds: 10-1

DH: Sam Querrey. Playing the best tennis of his life right now, if his Samurai can get the crowd behind him, he is going to be one guy no one wants to face in the later rounds. Odds: 26-1

Fav: Rafael Nadal. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice….. I picked him as a favorite to win at Wimbledon and he doesn’t even play! I think Rafa owes me one and he knows it. Odds: 4-1

DH: Ivo Karlovic. Anyone else think his scores will read something like 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 throughout the entire tournament? Odds: 36-1

Fav: Andy Roddick. I know this has nothing to do with his tennis, but this guy gives better interviews than anyone else on tour! Don’t believe me, just Youtube his interviews. Go ahead, I’ll wait… See? I know you LOL’d. This guy is seriously funny and he can play a bit of tennis, too. Odds: 8-1

DH: James Blake. If there is one surface where Blake can make a run, it’s here. Hard court. US soil. US fans. Let that forehand fly! Odds: 51-1

Fav: Andy Murray. It’s been a long time since the #1 or #2 player hasn’t been named Nadal or Federer. Murray has wedged his way into the cream of the crop, but can he make the final leap? I have my doubts. Odds: 7-1

DH: Radek Stepanek. This guy’s got game. Pun intended. Odds: 25-1

Fav: Novak Djokovic. Seems like everyone but Kana has written off Nole. Known for his impersonations of other players, let’s see if he can summon his inner Federer. Odds: 12-1

DH: Tomas Berdych. His favorite surface is hard court and his two biggest weapons are his serve and forehand. Sounds like this tournament is right up his alley. Odds: 32-1

Fav: Roger Federer. If you listen to the “experts” and their predictions, we might as well give him the trophy now. I say not so fast. I have three words for you: Newborn. Twin. Babies. Odds: 4-1

DH: Juan Carlos Ferrero. His hobbies are collecting cars and motorcycles. So we know he likes to collect the heavy metal. Can this be the tournament where he brings home the heavy metal in the form of a trophy? Odds: 44-1

So that’s it. Our picks for the men’s draw are in. Now the fun can really begin when the US Open begins on Monday. We’ll see in two weeks time which one of us gets to raise their adult beverage of choice in celebration.

What do you think of our choices? Who do you think will win our office pool? Weigh in and discuss throughout the tournament.

Don’t you worry, I will have the female picks up on Monday.
