US Open 2013 fashion: Maria Sharapova’s look that never was

The party has officially started in New York, but one of the A-listers is missing from the draw: Maria Sharapova.

The 2006 US Open champ is an A-lister not only for her tennis, but her fashion choices as well. She’s the only Nike female tennis player to have her name on a line of apparel, and off court, we often see her on the red carpet.

With New York being a hotbed for fashion, we can usually count on Maria to step up her fashion game. This year is no different when it comes to the fashion front, but sadly she had to pull out of the US Open due to a shoulder injury.

The big surprise for the 2013 US Open was going to be her night dress. The dress is a nod to the Big Apple with its abstract skyline print. Stepping out of the box, the shortie is intentionally longer than the dress — a look we haven’t seen on the courts (at least intentionally!).

The lightweight stretch woven fabric is perfect for a summer night in New York as well. It’s been known to get hot and humid during the tournament, and this fabric is perfect to withstand the heat. To add a quick pop of color, there are slimming seam covers through the torso on the Premier Maria Printed Dress.

For the day look, she was playing with textures. The bodice is a knit fabric, and the side panels are a very lightweight woven material with micro perforations. The Premier Maria Dress is very flattering on the body, with a slight flare through the skirt portion to provide nice waist definition.

We won’t get to see Maria step onto court with her dresses, but I for one will be watching to see if any of Nike’s athletes will wear them instead. Serena already has her own dress. Azarenka, anyone?

Stay tuned for more US Open fashion news!
