The finals of the TW Friday Doubles League pitted the aptly-named Team Air Cooled, who caught fire in the playoffs after some tough losses during the regular season, against Team Johnson and O’Leary, looking to complete the whole season unbeaten. Could Chris and Granville continue their hot streak, or would Andy and Spencer have enough left in the tank for one more hard fought victory?
In their previous matches against each other during the regular season, Chris and Granville took early leads in the pro set but were unable to close them out, losing both matches closely. In the finals, it was no different. Granville came out playing exceptionally, working the angles of the court beautifully and providing a daunting presence around the net while Chris backed him up with his usual guile and speed. After breaking Andy in the first game of the match, they jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, putting the pressure on Andy to hold in the fifth game to keep the match within reach.
Andy and Spencer hung tough and began playing a bit more aggressive, taking away the net from the charging Team Air Cooled. After a couple close games went their way, they evened the match and seemed to gain back a bit of the momentum.
The next few games were close as well, as each team took turns imposing their aggressive play on the other. It just so happened that Team Johnson and O’Leary were able to pull out each one of them. Frustration set in, allowing Andy and Spencer to win the last 7 games of the match, taking the TW Friday Doubles League championship with an 8-3 victory.
“We stuck to the old 80/20 rule of business,” Spencer offered in a quick-witted pearl of wisdom. “80% of the time, I am involved in 20% of the points. It was a time tested recipe that worked well for us, culminating in the ultimate goal…The FDL Championship.” “And yes,” he added, “I’ll be going to Disneyland.”
