Wednesday was my first full day on site at the BNP Paribas Open. Since I arrived Tuesday, the weather has been spectacular. The temperatures were in the upper 60s to low 70s, which is perfect for tennis — both watching and playing. Wind wasn’t much of a factor for spectators during the day, but it started to pick up as the day session ended. It looks like wind, not heat, may be the challenge for the players this year. I checked out the forecast, and it was showing wind for the weekend. Does that mean we will see some upsets? Only time will tell.
I spent most of my time Wednesday interviewing Sony Ericsson WTA players and trying to catch up with them on the practice courts to get some additional footage of them. The practice courts are one of the primary reasons I love the tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Fans can get really close views of the pros as they practice. I got to see a lot of top players today out there, including Murray, Clijsters, Dementieva and Azarenka. New to the practice courts this year are bleachers. Where it was previously gravel and standing room only, the tournament has put up bleachers so more fans can get a view of their favorite players.
I’m headed out again tomorrow, so wish me luck!
