Today we began the tournament at my home club at LifeTime Fitness Fridley. It has been really rainy, windy and cool here all week, with possible thunderstorms in the forecast for this weekend, but we were able to get the matches in outside today (luckily we have indoor backup if necessary).
My match today was against a very good junior in our section. He is a 6’3″ lefty that serves well, and is pretty solid at the baseline. After settling into the first set, I was playing fine and took it 6-2, then broke serve to start the second set. At that point, I had a bad game missing some easy shots and serves to lose it back. I was rattled, frustrated and continued to make a lot of errors but we both were holding serve. Despite the struggle, I pulled it together to take the second set and match 6-4. It is never fun playing below where you would like, and against a tougher opponent I know I will have to stay mentally strong and not let it affect my game. I am confident in my ability to do this, and it was just “one of those days” today!
Tomorrow is a new day, and I will plan to come out focused and hungry to get my confidence back by playing well. It will be the semi-final match against an older player that is just starting to try to make his way back into a couple tournaments (but he was very successful when he was younger). The doubles will also begin later in the afternoon, so that should be fun. The other semi-final singles match should be very interesting as well as it is a match up between an improving young junior who plays alot of ITF and Futures against a veteran who does not play many tournaments anymore, but is dangerous and was once a top ranked division one player years ago. I have played them both several times and I am not sure who will come out on top.
I will report again soon, hopefully with good news before the finals are to be played on Monday! Here is a link to the draw: http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=130575
