Mats Merkel: From the Australian Open 2013, Day 3

Hello all,

Today I would also like to speak a little about how the players who get their racquets strung up and who does it for them.

There are many different options that the players have:

THE OFFICIAL STRINGERS on site done are a big team of approximately 18 stringers. They all use stringing machines from Wilson.

PRIORITY ONE TENNIS,  a company that provides not only a stringing service, but also the customisation of the players racquets. There are different partnerships you can have with P1.

Here a link to their website – http://p1tennis.com/services

RPNY stringers. They are based in NY as the name says. Their clients are Sharapova and Berdych and some others. They also do customisation a of racquets. See the link to their website below:

RACKET BRAND stringers. Yonex offers that service to their players but at the Grand Slams only. They sometimes have to string 50 racquets overnight for their contracted players. And as a little goodie for the players they also string the coaches racquets – not bad, no?

Andy Murray, for example, gets his racquets freshly strung every morning.

In the end it really is up to the players what they want. Some of them prefer to be treated specially and have the same stringer at ever event.

Therefore the companies such P1 or RPNY do have their staff/people travel around the world following the tour.

Serena Williams rolled her ankle a little yesterday after having won the first set 6-0 against Gallovits. But she was okay and moved on, not losing one game in the entire match. Picture this morning in the newspaper about her.

The Australian super talent Bernard Tomic won his first match last night in straight sets against Argentinian Leonardo Mayer.

At 10 a.m. the lines people were getting in from the morning meeting at 9:30 discussing the schedule.

Germany’s best female player is in action on Margaret Court Arena against the Czech Lucy Hradecka.

Her German countrywoman Julia Goerges will be on right right after her.

In a possibly late starting match American Ryan Harrison will face Novak Djokovic during night session after Venus Williams and Alize Cornet finish their match. Ryan played a great match on Monday, beating Giraldo from Columbia in an exciting match! A real nail-biter…

An all American match is also on today between Sam Querry and Brian Baker. That will also be an interesting one to watch.

A very warm and sunny day here today in Melbourne an the heat is coming. For tomorrow the forecast is 39 degrees (102 F). Not easy for the players to keep their cool when it is that hot. Better bring some sunscreen!  The heat is on!

Today’s order of play:
