Best new gear at the 2013 Australian Open

Posted on January 18, 2013 in Miscellaneous

As the first week of the 2013 Australian Open comes to a close, I want to spotlight some of the great new gear we have seen introduced at the tournament. There’s tons of new racquets, shoes and apparel being released at the beginning of the year, so I want to dish out some awards to the best introductions of new swag at the first Grand Slam of 2013…

Best men’s outfit (shirt/shorts only, no shoes):  Lotto

I’m going with a surprise in this category, but I think the new Lotto outfit is awesome. The bright yellow design is super eye-catching on TV, and they have quite a few guys still going in the draw, like Kevin Anderson, Nicolas Almagro, and David Ferrer. They are wearing the Lotto Men’s Spring Graphic LED Crew and the Spring LED Short (and Bermuda Short).  Look for this gear to become available from TW next month.

Best women’s outfit (top/bottom only, no shoes):  Nike

With the help of the women in the office, we decided that Nike was the winner, but not with their flagship lines. We thought the lower ranked Nike players like young American Lauren Davis and Sabine Lisicki had a nice casual, yet stylish look going with the Nike Women’s Spring Cotton Stripe Tank and Grand Slam Skirt.

Best men’s shoe: Nike Air Max Cage
The best men’s shoe release of the tournament I think is the new Nike Air Max Cage. Not only do they have one of the top men in the draw, Juan Martin Del Potro, in them, but as we undergo our playtest of them here at TW we are quickly finding them to be one of our new favorite shoes on the market. They offer a good blend of comfort and stability, while also showing great durability.

Best women’s shoe: Nike Women’s Vapor 9 Tour
I think we can say without question the introduction of the Nike Women’s Vapor 9 has been the most exciting shoe release of 2013. Nike has the top 2 seeds in the women’s draw wearing them (Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova) along with many other of their top women. Arguably the most comfortable men’s shoe around is now finally available to women, and in some great colors as well.

The Babolat AeroPro Drive 2013

Best racquet: Babolat AeroPro Drive 2013

The Babolat AeroPro Drive 2013‘s new paint job looks great on television, and it’s in the hands of many popular players, such as Jo Wilfried Tsonga, Sam Querrey, Jerzy Janowicz and Steve Johnson, among others. In addition to the sharp look, our playtest team agrees that it’s the best performing AeroPro Drive to date.

Best men’s look (shirt, shorts and shoes): adidas adizero and barricade
Yellow seems to be the in color so far this year, and no one has demonstrated this better than adidas on the men’s side. Both their adizero and barricade lines of apparel look great, and they are accented by some incredibly sharp looking shoes. The adizero line is being worn by the likes of Jo Wilfried Tsonga, Fernando Verdasco and Alexandr Dolgopolov, just to name a few, who are in the Spring adizero Crew or Polo and adizero Short, accented by the sharp looking and great performing adizero CC Feather II shoes. Andy Murray and Marcos Baghdatis showcase the barricade line, with the Spring barricade Crew (or Semi Fitted Crew for Murray) and barricade short, along with the barricade 7.0 shoes.

Best women’s look (top, bottom and shoes): adidas adizero and Stella McCartney barricade
Adidas takes a clean sweep in this category, as the women are looking as good or better than the men. They also have two lines going; the Stella McCartney barricade Group (worn by Caroline Wozniacki, Maria Kirilenko and Laura Robson) and the Spring/Summer adizero Group (worn by Angelique Kerber, Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova). Yellow once again is the color, all tied together by the new colorways in the barricade 7.0 women’s shoe and the adizero CC Tempaia II shoe.

That’s all for now folks!  Thanks for reading and make sure to keep watching the Australian Open!
