Aussie Open Predictions

Can you feel it? It’s almost palpable.

All that pent up energy and excitement is starting to get unleashed. It’s been building for nearly 5 months now. That’s how long it’s been since the last major championship. But now it’s finally here, the first major of the New Year. The best players in the world are going to bring the thunder from down under.

Crikey! The Australian Open is upon us. Throw another shrimp on the barbie mate!

A number of things are bound to happen in the next two weeks. One, once again, my sleeping schedule is going to be thrown off so I will most likely be a walking zombie in the morning. Two, I’m going to be so pumped/inspired from watching that I’m going to go out the next day and try to hit shots that aren’t in my repertoire, eventually hurting myself. (Picture Nadal’s forehand or Federer’s tweener). Third, I’m going to lose a lot of friends with my constant and terrible attempt at an Australian accent.

If you’ve been following my blogs during the past few Major championships (and why wouldn’t you), then you know a few of us here at Tennis Warehouse like to stare into our crystal balls and make predictions. Sometimes we’re right, but realistically, most of the time we’re wrong. Here are our thoughts of how things will shake down, down under. Winners are in bold.

Brittany
Men’s Final: Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal
Women’s Final: Kim Clijsters vs. Caroline Wozniacki
My Take: On one hand, we have the undisputed best player in the world, on the other, we have Roger Federer. Ooo, ouch! Sorry Fed fans. Another dream match up in the women’s final. Experience versus It’s-About-Timeness. Gotta go with experience.

Jason
Men’s Final: Rafael Nadal vs. Novak Djokovic
Women’s Final: Venus Williams vs. Kim Clijsters
My Take: With the win, he would complete the “Rafa Slam”, holding all 4 majors. Little ole ‘Nole isn’t going to stop him from accomplishing that goal. I expect this to be very similar to the US Open final.

Kana
Men’s Final: Rafael Nadal vs. Novak Djokovic
Women’s Final: Kim Clijsters vs. Victoria Azarenka
My Take: A Clijsters/Azarenka final should be pretty ho hum.  Clijsters owns a 4-1 head to head record against Azarenka. If this is the final matchup, they can start engraving the trophy during warm-ups. Just sayin’.

Spencer
Men’s Final: Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal
Women’s Final: Kim Clijsters vs. Caroline Wozniacki
My Take: If you’ve ever seen the show “Millionaire Matchmaker,” then you’ll get this analogy. At the beginning of the show, the matchmaker lady sets up multiple suitors for the millionaire guy, and in the group, there’s always this one girl that he knows is a bad choice, but he picks her anyways. That’s pretty much Spencer with his men’s pick. He knows well and good that he shouldn’t pick Federer, but he went with it anyways. And just like in the show, it won’t work out at the end. And at some point, there will be awkward silence.

Suzie
Men’s Final: Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal
Women’s Final: Kim Clijsters vs. Caroline Wozniacki
My Take: If you’ve ever seen the show “Millionaire Matchmaker,” then you’ll get this analogy. Just kidding. As the only person to pick Wozniacki, I must respect the boldness and audacity of the pick. Although Wozniacki has exactly as many wins over Clijsters as I do. Yea, that’d be 0.

Chris
Men’s Final: Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal
Women’s Final: Venus Williams vs. Kim Clijsters
My Take: I really like both these finals and the winners. This Chris guy must know at thing or two about tennis. Hopefully both matches go the maximum amount of sets.

Tiffani
Men’s Final: Rafael Nadal vs. Novak Djokovic
Women’s Final: Kim Clijsters vs. Caroline Wozniacki
My Take: Have you noticed a trend with our picks? In case you couldn’t tell, we love Clijsters and Nadal! What’s not to like? One has gorgeous flowing hair with great strokes and the other is Kim “The Sweetheart” Clijsters.

The best players in the world are already battling it out in Melbourne, so what are you still doing here? My blog is over! Turn off your computer and turn on your TV. And if you’re in the US, prepare to start losing some sleep. I know I will. Crikey!

G’day mate,

Jason, TW
