Since I can’t serve and volley in Shotgun 15 (sad face) my tactic was to not miss. I played defensively throughout and picked my moments of attack carefully. I tried to move my opponents by hitting to safe targets and used high percentage plays when attacking. When defending, I tried to keep my slice low off the backhand to force my opponents to have to lift the ball up over the net and hopefully force them either to use less pace or miss. On my forehand I tried to use depth and placement to prevent my opponents from attacking.
I used my Six.One 95 BLX (18×20) because I have consistently used this racquet more than any other of the hundreds I have hit with over the past couple of years. The weight, combined with the response of this racquet makes me feel connected to the ball. I don’t have any customization on these racquets other than a leather grip which adds a bit of weight to the handle. I was using the Prince Tour XC 16L Yellow String at 45 lbs, since I am currently playtesting it. To be honest, as long as it is a Poly or Co-Poly monofilament string around 45 lbs, than that works for me. I used a Wilson Pro Overgrip Sensation, because I had one lying around my desk before we headed down to play; typicallyI favor Tourna Grip Original XL, but I’m not all that picky as long as it absorbs moisture fairly well. I was wearing the New Balance MC 1296 D, since I was given these to test about a month or two ago; not my favorite shoe because when I lace them too tightly they tend to cramp my feet, similar to how the Nike Courtballistec 3.3 were for me. I typically favor the Asics Gel Resolution 5, but I figured I would wear my playtest shoes since we were just playing a baseline game; heck I sometimes play those with my shoes untied. I wore a Joma Men’s Picasho Crew and Wilson Men’s Core Rush Plaid Shorts, both of which were given to me and were also clean when I woke up that morning. I don’t recall which socks I wore that day, but I know I was wearing two pairs; standard.I was playing Chris Edwards and I figured it would be a difficult baseline game to win since he has been playing for a long time and is a great strategist. I didn’t necessarily have a particular game plan for him, other than to be aggressive. Once that failed, so did the rest of the baseline game for me. As Rafa would say, “He play better than me today, No?!!” All I do now is get better.
