2012 Favorites: Strings

With our favorite picks for racquets and shoes now in the books, we turn to the playtesters’ favorite strings in 2012. Which strings did you try this year that you consider standouts?

Luxilon 4G

Jason: ”With so much string too choose from, it takes a really special one to stand out, and that is the Luxilon 4G. As to be expected with a poly, control and spin are great. But the ball pocketing was surprisingly good as well. It doesn’t play as soft as my favorite string, Polyfibre TCS, but not nearly as firm as other polyesters. The best thing about it is that it maintains tension well. Which is something polyesters are not known for. I usually have to cut out a poly string within 2-3 weeks, but with the 4G, I can leave it in for a month.”

Chris: ”I’m a big fan of Luxilon 4G. I get great spin and control with 4G in my racquets. I’ve hit the string in a ton of racquets and have found it to work great in all of them. I recently even hit 4G in a wood racquet and it still felt great, adding some control and spin to help tame the 13.5 ounces of wood fueled plow through.”

2012 Favorites: Shoes

Yesterday we kicked off our favorites of 2012 countdown with the playtesters’ favorite racquets of the year. Next up, we pick our favorite shoes from the past year.

Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour

Completely redesigned for 2012, the Vapor impressed our playtesters. Roger Federer’s shoe looks great and fits a variety of foot shapes well with its adaptive fit technology. It did so well in our tests that Chris went further than saying it was his favorite shoe of the year.

Chris: “With its unbelievable fit and feel, the Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour quickly became my favorite shoe of all time. The adaptive lace system allows the shoe to wrap my feet in incredible support and comfort. The shoe is lightweight, very fast feeling, offers great traction and looks absolutely killer. Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield took tennis shoe performance to a whole new level when he penned this one.”

2012 Favorites: Racquets

It’s time to say goodbye to another year and time to say hello to all the year-end “Best of” lists. So not to be outdone, we’re rolling out our list of Best of 2012 product lists. Once again the playtesters put on their thinking caps to come up with these favorites. We would love to hear yours, too. To kick off the countdown to 2013, we have our 2012 favorite racquets. For a flashback, check out the list of 2011′s top racquets.

AeroPro Drive GT 2013

This may have 2013 in the name, but by our rules, if it sold in 2012, it’s eligible. The new AeroPro Drive GT must be quite the impressive racquet to make the list of not one but two of our strongest playtesters, and it’s only been out for a month or so.

Siobhan: “Racquet of choice right now – I only spent the whole year waiting for it! It feels similar to the previous Aero, and the current Pure Drive, but the feel and response is just improved. I like stiff racquets, which this one is, and combined with power, spin and great control. This racquet just really suits my game and it’s probably the only racquet I feel truly comfortable playing with right now.”

Andy: “Power, access to spin, maneuverable, stable…this racquet has a lot to offer. And with the Active Cortex introduced to the frame, it’s the most comfortable AeroPro Drive yet.”
